Wilmington - Allison Dancewicz of Wilmington is performing in this year’s production of Jose Mateo Ballet Theater’s “The Nutcracker.” 

Allison joins the professional cast in this holiday favorite with performances at the Spingold Theater at Brandeis University in Waltham and The Duxbury Performing Arts Center. Allison is a junior at Wilmington High School and currently dances with the Wilmington Dance Academy.

Now in its 22nd season, José Mateo Ballet Theater’s “The Nutcracker” has become a holiday tradition for New England audiences since 1987. This will be José Mateo Ballet Theater’s fourth Nutcracker season at The Spingold Theater at Brandeis University in Waltham and its fifth return trip to The Duxbury Performing Arts Center. 

Choreographed by artistic director José Mateo, this original production of “The Nutcracker” distinguishes itself from others by its focus on the dancing rather than the usual mime and theatrics associated with other productions. This is especially true of the 200 dancers like Allison, who join the professional cast as party children, mice, soldiers, cherubs, attendants, angels and the story’s main character, Clara.

Now in its 24th season, José Mateo Ballet Theater has forged a new model for a ballet organization that defies traditional stereotypes. Under the direction of founder and artistic director José Mateo, the company and school have gained a solid reputation for artistic excellence and quality programming. It is the only ballet company in New England to present a full repertory — over 80 original works — by its own resident choreographer.
